Does the position of your eyebrows make you look "tired" or "angry" even when you aren’t? As we get older, loose and sagging skin can lead to drooping of the eyebrows. Most people feel that this negatively impacts their appearance and may contribute to the look of excess skin on the eyelids.
The good news is that Brooklyn Face and Eye Center Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. Aida Bounama offers treatments and procedures that can tighten and lift the skin of the brows and forehead, giving you a more awake, rejuvenated, and rested appearance, that will last for many years. Dr. Bounama gives each patient a personal evaluation, with recommendations based on their individual goals and needs.
Non-Surgical Brow Lift raises the brows using neuromodulators such as Botox, which relax the muscles that contribute to the formation of wrinkles. This technique is done in the office and is best used for younger patients who are just beginning to show signs of eyebrow descent or patients who are unable to undergo surgery. The effects are subtle, but can significantly improve eyebrow appearance in the perfect candidate.
Brow Lifting Surgery
Surgical brow and forehead procedures are performed as outpatient surgeries and typically take only a couple of hours to complete. Bruising and swelling are common, while serious complications are extremely rare. Depending on the procedure, recovery time is typically one week with the bruising and swelling lasting for two weeks.
Dr. Bounama and the staff of the Brooklyn Face and Eye Center are committed to delivering outstanding care to every patient. Your eyelids are vital to the health and function of your eyes. They are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your eyes from trauma, foreign bodies, and from the damaging effects of sunlight. Another function of the eyelid is tear distribution: keeping the surface of eye lubricated and healthy.
The eyelid skin is susceptible to damage from injuries, infections, and skin cancer just to name a few. In addition to endangering the health of the eye, eyelid deformities can also negatively impact the appearance of the face. The social and emotional aspect of facial deformity can be very significant, as our face is our representation to the world around us.
State of the Art Eyelid Repair, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Enhancement Procedures
There are a number of effective oculoplastic procedures designed to restore the eyelid to its original appearance and function. As an Oculoplastic Specialist, Dr. Bounama is trained in the latest eyelid reconstructive and cosmetic enhancement and repair procedures (including post-Mohs cancer surgery eyelid reconstruction).
Eyelid surgery is used to treat a number of different issues including:
- Ptosis - drooping of the eyelids
- Growths on the eyelids, including skin cancer
- Trauma to the eyelids
- Entropion - inward-turning of the eyelid
- Ectropion - loose eyelids that turn out
- Eyelid retraction
- Trichiasis - misdirected eyelashes
- Epiblepharon - normal eyelashes pushed toward the eye by redundant folds of skin
- Lagophthalmos- inability to fully close the eyelids
Post-Mohs Surgery Eyelid Reconstruction
Mohs surgery is one of the most effective treatments to remove basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other types of skin cancer. During Mohs surgery, thin layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains.
However, when Mohs surgery is performed to remove a tumor from the eyelid, a reconstructive procedure will be required following the surgery to restore your eye to its natural beauty and function. Dr. Bounama has achieved excellent results for patients who require reconstructive eyelid surgery after a Mohs surgery.
Dr. Bounama will tailor treatment based on the exact nature of your anatomy and needs. For example, very simple eyelid defects can sometimes be repaired with stitches, but more significant reconstructions may require the use of skin grafts or flaps of skin and muscle, taken from elsewhere on the body. Our procedures are designed to restore functionality and to give optimal cosmetic results.

Brooklyn Face and Eye Center offers a wide range of procedures to make your eyes look more youthful and vibrant.
Your eyes are one of the first things people notice when they look at you. Unfortunately, they are also one of the first places on the face that start to show signs of aging. The cumulative effects of age, gravity, and overexposure to the sun can result in wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, and droopy eyelids. This can give the face a tired and exhausted look.
Dr. Bounama can restore a more youthful and alert appearance by removing excess eyelid skin, lifting the eyelids, and removing excess fat around the eyes.
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
The objective of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) is to remove excess skin and fat so that the eyes appear younger and more alert. Usually, the incision is concealed in the eyelid's natural crease, the muscle that raises the upper lid is tightened, and any protruding fat is sculpted, excised, or repositioned to rejuvenate the upper eyelid.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Over time, fat begins to protrude through the lower eyelid skin causing the formation of under eye bags. Also, loss of fat in other regions of the cheek due to facial descent can result in hollowing beneath the eyes. Neither is a flattering look and can give a premature appearance of aging.
In a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the fat that causes bags to form beneath the eyes is removed and/or repositioned to smooth the contour of the lower eyelid. The incision is usually hidden on the inside of the eyelid. Any excess skin is removed.
Under eye hollowing (tear trough) can also be treated non-surgically with injectable fillers that smooth the lower eyelid contour and eliminate the appearance of under eye hollowing and dark circles.
Upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasties are often performed at the same time. Our goal is to give you natural and rejuvenated results, while avoiding an “overdone” look people won't know that you've had surgery unless you tell them.
If your eyelids droop so low that they block your vision, then eyelid surgery may be a medical necessity and may be covered by your insurance.
Blepharoplasties are minimally invasive outpatient surgical procedures that only take one to two hours to complete. They can be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as a brow lift. The swelling and bruising usually resolve in two weeks, depending on the procedure and each person's anatomy.
Dr. Aida Bounama is a highly trained Oculoplastic Surgeon who has achieved stunning results in her patients after they have undergone reconstructive and cosmetic procedures for the eyelids and structures surrounding the eyes.
